Published online: 13 April 2008 | doi:10.1038/nn.2112

Unconscious determinants of free decisions in the human brain
Chun Siong Soon1,2, Marcel Brass1,3, Hans-Jochen Heinze4 & John-Dylan Haynes1,2

There has been a long controversy as to whether subjectively 'free' decisions are determined by brain activity ahead of time. We found that the outcome of a decision can be encoded in brain activity of prefrontal and parietal cortex up to 10 s before it enters awareness. This delay presumably reflects the operation of a network of high-level control areas that begin to prepare an upcoming decision long before it enters awareness.

My research in the UK is reflected to this. A new point of the paper is the difference between Japanese and European people in switching pose(response time) of conversations toward a consensus. In cases of Japanese speaker, switching poses were synchronized in the end of conversation. Whereas those of European people were not so. This result suggests that we Japanese regard the timings of utterance more pragmatical than European people do.

I haven't thought so. 'cause of its simpleness, not even being a network!

1st, mechanisms of illusion of 'voluntary decision';
We human feel a decision of a person is done by the person. as well as we think decision is voluntary. But, to be exact, the person doesn't decide by oneself. We just see results of calculation in a brain that conducted involuntary. The target is to describe the mechanism of this subjective illusion.

2nd, mechanisms of qualia;
how qualia arises like we feel subjectively. I have no idea how to show this so far.
